Businesses survey their customers to find out what they need, then brainstorm ideas for products that might meet their requirements. Businesses carefully vet concepts for new products and determine the best path of development to follow. New Product Introduction NPI is the process that takes an idea from an initial working prototype to a thoroughly refined and reproducible final product. Since NPI requires a substantial investment of time and resources, careful planning goes into each step to ensure that the result will be worth the effort.
Once developers decide on the purpose of a new product, the work of modification and refinement begins. Product engineers join with marketing, sales and business personnel to define precisely which specifications the new product must have to meet the desires of customers. Designers float concepts for the new product until the feasibility of a particular design route establishes itself as the best solution.
New Product Introduction and Manufacturing Sustaining: Lead all collaborative efforts with Manufacturing Engineering, Production Engineering and Quality Engineering to: Define manufacturing processes, production targets, costs, contracting with outside vendors and even competitive factors. Review manufacturing sourcing RFPs and responses. Approves the selection of sub-contractors, monitors sub-contractors performance.
Create manufacturing plans for prototype, pilot production and full production. Demonstrates and owns production readiness and documenting same via the RTP release to production checklist. Sustain the manufacturing process by minimizing scrap and rework.
Attends project reviews and design reviews. Presents updates at project reviews on manufacturing readiness and issues. Creates product validation test plans , manages validation and presents validation results, conclusions and recommendations to SWE staff.
Test Engineering - IQC and production test plan and implementation Defines requirements and oversees design of production test fixtures utilizing in-house team members or outside contractors. Resolution for production issues or field returns with embedded electronics Provides technical support to the manufacturing floor, manufacturing vendors and often to sales and customers.
