Females measure from to centimeters 50 to 75 inches and weigh 40 to 80 kilograms 90 to pounds. Black bears vary considerably in size, depending on the quality of the food available. Males may be from about 20 to 60 percent larger than females. At birth, cubs weigh to grams 7 to 11 ounces.
Black bears are normally found only in forested areas, but within such habitat they are highly adaptable. They live in both arid and moist forests, from sea level to over 2, meters 6, feet. Historically, black bears are thought to have stayed away from open habitat because of the risk of predation by brown bears. Black bears have become established in the tundra of northern Labrador, a region where there are no brown bears. Black bears are widely distributed throughout the forested areas of North America although they have been totally driven out from some of their original range.
They are presently found in northern Mexico, 32 states of the United States, and all the provinces and territories of Canada except Prince Edward Island. During the breeding season, a male may attend a female for up to two weeks for mating. Brown bears are distributed in overlapping home ranges and male home ranges are larger than those occupied by females.
Despite their propensity for a solitary existence, brown bears congregate at high densities where food is abundant, such as at salmon streams or garbage dumps. In such circumstances, adult males are the most dominant individuals. Brown bears mainly eat vegetation such as grasses, sedges, bulbs, and roots. They also eat insects such as ants, fish, and small mammals.
In some areas they have become significant predators of large hoofed mammals such as moose calves, caribou, and elk calves. Appearance The brown bear sometimes called a grizzly in North America is a large animal, usually dark brown in color, though it can vary from a light creamy shade through to black. Size There is considerable variability in the size of brown bears from different populations, depending on the food available. The bears are an endangered species, listed as Vulnerable, and it is illegal to kill them.
The Andean bear is the last remaining short-faced bear subfamily Tremarctinae and the closest living relative to the Florida spectacled bear and short-faced bears of the Middle Pleistocene to Late Pleistocene age.
Spectacled bears are the only surviving species of bear native to South America, and the only surviving member of the subfamily Tremarctinae. The Spectacled bear is a mid-sized species of bear. Overall its fur is blackish in color, though bears may vary from jet black to dark brown and to even a reddish hue. The pattern and extent of pale markings are slightly different on each individual bear and bears can be readily distinguished by this.
Males are a third larger than females in dimensions and sometimes twice their weight. Males can weigh — kilograms — lb , and females 35 —82 kilograms 77 — lb. Length can range from to cm 47—79 in , with a tail length of a mere 7 cm 2. Compared to other living bears, this species has a more rounded face with a relatively short and broad snout.
